Is it true that Cookies are really going to run out?!

Previously, we already told you about Cookies. Small files saved on your computer, by the browser, originating from the websites and platforms you visit. These can store browsing information, login, browsing behavior, etc. Lately, the news that cookies are going to end, and that this end will have an impact on online businesses, has been spreading around the internet. But is this impact really that relevant?

Are Cookies really going to end?

Now, here’s the thing… not exactly. Session Cookies and First-Party Cookies will continue, only Third-Party Cookies have an end in sight.

These are the “bad cookies”, as their purpose is tracking. They can have access to your browsing history, online behavior, consumption habits, etc. However, currently, I think that almost all major browsers allow you to block these cookies in their settings.

Why will Third Party Cookies end?

Currently, due to the GDPR, websites are obliged to respect the security and privacy of their users. As well as providing greater transparency in relation to the data that is collected. Thus, one of the main reasons is the fact that a large percentage of users resort to blocking these cookies, and that the browsers themselves allow them to be blocked. Something that makes them obsolete. But, obviously, the main reason is related to the violation of user data privacy.

When will Cookies run out?

Google announced that its browser Google Chrome (used on around 70% of all computers in the world) will block these cookies as early as 2024. Most likely, other existing browsers will follow suit. Effectively, putting an end to Third Party Cookies, by blocking them. Obviously this will have a huge impact on all existing websites.

What will change for users?

In fact, users of your website will not notice a difference in their browsing experience. From a digital marketing point of view, obviously, the story will be different!

It’s no secret that the data collected by cookies is extremely important for creating a better experience for users. But it’s also no mystery that these are used to optimize marketing strategies, and provide the user with advertisements (for example) for products related to their interests.

It is normal for the end of cookies to predict major changes in the world of marketing, but it is something that we see as a natural evolution of the processing of personal data in the digital sphere. This means that, naturally and almost certainly, new solutions will emerge for the purposes of digital marketing use. These solutions will certainly contribute to better safeguarding the personal data of all users.
